German Language Student Achievements

Mahopac High School students are earning recognition for their achievements in German language studies, with honors that extend beyond the classroom.

Junior Gloria Nelson was recently awarded a scholarship to study abroad in Germany this summer. With funding support from the Bavarian Club Edelweiss and the American Association of Teachers of German, her full program fee will be covered for the three-week experience.

Freshman Colin Sprague also earned national recognition, receiving a Gold Medal on the 2026 National German Exam. As a national finalist, Sprague had the opportunity to compete for a scholarship to study in Germany.

“I am incredibly proud of Gloria and Colin for their hard work and commitment to learning the German language,” said Katrina Bauerlein, German teacher at Mahopac High School and Mahopac Middle School. “These achievements reflect not only their academic dedication, but also their willingness to challenge themselves and explore new opportunities.”

The Mahopac High School German program will celebrate these accomplishments, along with other student achievements, during its second annual German Awards Night on May 18 at 7 p.m. in the Falls School Auditorium. The event will recognize National German Exam medal winners, National German Honor Society inductees and graduating seniors.
