The Mahopac Central School District has once again been recognized by The NAMM Foundation as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education earning the distinction for the sixth consecutive year.
Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music Education program honors school districts across the United States for their outstanding commitment to music education and efforts to ensure all students have access to high-quality music instruction as part of a well-rounded education.
The award recognizes districts that demonstrate achievement in areas including student participation, funding, instruction, facilities and community support for music programs. Mahopac is one of just over 1,000 school districts and schools nationwide who received the recognition in 2026.
“Music education plays such an important role in the overall growth of our students,” Mahopac music teacher and department chair Heather Palkewick said. “Through music, students build confidence, creativity, discipline and connections that extend far beyond the classroom. We are incredibly proud of the opportunities available to our students and grateful for the continued support of our school community.”
Mahopac’s music program offers students a wide range of opportunities beginning at the elementary level and continuing through high school, including band, chorus, orchestra, theater and music technology, as well as a variety of performance experiences that allow students to develop their talents and express themselves creatively.
“This is a tremendous honor for our district,” Superintendent of Schools Frank Miele said. “Our students and music staff are incredibly talented and this recognition reflects the hard work and dedication they bring to our program every day. We are so fortunate to have a community that values and supports music education and the arts.”
