Mahopac High School junior Matthew Torrey has been recognized as a 2026 Rensselaer Medalist, an honor awarded to high-achieving students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science.
Torrey was nominated by his counselor Peter Vano and the MHS Counseling Department based on his academic merit and accomplishments in the classroom. The prestigious recognition is presented by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), one of the nation’s leading technological research universities.
First awarded in 1916, the Rensselaer Medal was established to recognize outstanding secondary school juniors and encourage students to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. Recipients who apply to, are accepted by and choose to enroll at RPI receive a merit scholarship valued at $40,000 per year for up to four years, or five years for students enrolled in the School of Architecture.
“Matthew is an exceptional student who has demonstrated tremendous dedication and achievement in mathematics and science,” Mahopac High School Principal Patrick Keevins said. “This recognition reflects not only his academic abilities, but also his hard work, curiosity and commitment to excellence. We are incredibly proud of him.”
According to RPI, nearly 10% of the university’s Class of 2026 were recipients of the Rensselaer Medal. Medalists officially receive their medals during their first year at the university if they choose to enroll. Mahopac congratulates Torrey on this well-deserved recognition.
