Mahopac Middle School marked Pi Day with a daylong celebration that brought students and staff together for a mix of math-themed activities, school spirit and community giving.
As part of the festivities, the school hosted a weeklong food drive to benefit Putnam CAP, collecting more than 350 items. Students earned raffle entries for their donations, adding an extra layer of excitement and encouraging participation throughout the week.
The celebration kicked off with a custom music video created by members of the math department and Mahopac education technology specialist Jason Zides, setting a fun and energetic tone for the day. During lunch periods, students gathered outside the cafeteria to take part in interactive math games and activities.
A highlight of the event was a buildingwide scavenger hunt, where students searched for hidden miniature wolves throughout the school and exchanged them for Pi Day prizes. The activity sparked enthusiasm across all grade levels and kept students engaged throughout the day.
Students Gia Bernardo and Madison Lagoa shared their appreciation for the entire day.
“It was so fun,” Bernardo said. “I loved the prizes and the little wolves, and it was great learning more about pi.”
Math teacher Morissa Townsend said the event was a meaningful way to bring the school community together.
“It was wonderful to see the entire building come together to celebrate one of mathematics’ national holidays,” Townsend said. “The energy and enthusiasm from students and staff made this truly special, and we’re excited to continue this tradition.”
The event was supported by the PTO and yearbook committee, as well as building administrators, whose contributions helped make the day a success. Through activities like Howl for Pi, Mahopac Middle School continues to create engaging opportunities for students to connect with learning in fun and memorable ways.
